Taleek Norman: Creating Lasting Impact Through National Service

Taleek Norman is the kind of coach every child needs and a team member that every organization deserves. Sports have always held a special place in his heart and he embodies a unique ability to connect individuals from diverse backgrounds and transform lives in profound ways. Through Taleek’s multiple AmeriCorps service terms through Up2Us Sports at NYC’s Equity Design, we have seen how participation in sports has not only fostered camaraderie and teamwork between himself and his students but also between him and other coaches. He catalyzes personal growth and development and is a pillar of light in his community. This story delves into the inherent power of sports to build connections, facilitate personal transformation, provide opportunities for growth, foster community engagement, and empower individuals to overcome challenges through athletic pursuits.

Taleek first began his journey at Up2Us Sports as a coach in September of 2022. In his words:

“I’ve always believed in the power of sports to connect people and provide opportunities that can transform lives. Growing up, sports allowed me to find my voice and purpose, giving me experiences I could never have imagined, like cycling in Africa and participating in a rite of passage ceremony that shaped my understanding of community and resilience.”

I’ve always believed in the power of sports to connect people and provide opportunities that can transform lives.

As an educator, Taleek is deeply committed to fostering equity in education, particularly for athletes in Black and Brown communities. Today, as part of his work, he is committed to creating similar opportunities for students in these communities, ensuring they have access to programs that can inspire them and open doors. One of his proudest achievements is partnering with USA Cycling and bringing a Brooklyn native and Olympic medal winner to host the first-ever cycling field day at a school, giving these students a hands-on experience they’ve never had before.

Taleek achieved numerous successes during his year as an Up2Us Coach, and in recognition of his dedication to his athletes and community, he was honored earlier this year as the Up2Us Sports Regional Coach of the Year for New York City. In October of 2023, he transitioned over to the role of an Up2Us VISTA, supporting Equity Design in their front office. Just last month, he renewed for a second term as an Up2Us VISTA. When asked about how he chose to stay with Equity Design as a VISTA, he said:

“Through my work as a VISTA, I’ve been able to give back to the community by creating meaningful partnerships that provide access to resources most wouldn’t have imagined. I’ve helped bring USA Cycling to schools in Black and Brown communities, where we hosted the first-ever cycling field day with a Brooklyn native and Olympic medal winner, an event that left a lasting impression on both students and staff. Additionally, by working with On Sports, I was able to secure sponsorships for PS 32, providing teachers with sneakers and gear and bringing professional runners to participate in their field day. These programs not only improve physical fitness but also serve as gateways to opportunities, allowing students to see what’s possible beyond their immediate environment.”

Taleek has earned a reputation for being an exceptional mentor and guide for individuals seeking personal and professional growth. With a rich background in coaching and a passion for helping others succeed, Taleek has established a unique approach that sets them apart in the world of coaching. He has had a meaningful impact on his community and will continue to do so in the future. In his words:

Being both a Coach and a VISTA with Up2Us Sports has taught me how sports can be a catalyst for community revitalization and personal transformation
— Taleek Norman

“Being both a Coach and a VISTA with Up2Us Sports has taught me how sports can be a catalyst for community revitalization and personal transformation. By creating partnerships with organizations like USA Cycling and On Sports, I’ve learned how to build bridges between communities and resources, offering students opportunities they never imagined. Hosting events like the cycling field day, or sponsoring running programs, has reinforced how these partnerships can inspire and elevate underserved communities. These experiences have honed my skills in program development, partnership building, and resource allocation, all of which are essential for my future career in community development and advocacy. I’ve seen firsthand how sports can provide access to an infinite universe of opportunities, and I’m dedicated to continuing this work as part of my career journey.”

Through his work with USA Cycling and On Sports, he has been able to bring unique, first-of-their-kind programs to students in underserved communities, providing them with access to resources, gear, and inspiration from professional athletes. His role in facilitating these experiences as a VISTA has helped both students and teachers, showing how sports can empower and create new possibilities for everyone involved.

Through both of his roles as a Coach and VISTA at Up2Us Sports, Taleek has exemplified the power of perseverance, empathy, and dedication. His commitment to empowering youth through sports not only has made a positive impact on the community but also shaped his personal growth journey. Taleek's leadership taught us the importance of resilience, teamwork, and the ability to inspire others to reach their full potential. From facilitating effective mentorship programs to fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity, Taleek ensured that his impact would be long-lasting. By promoting sustainable practices, Taleek laid the foundation for ongoing success and growth within the organization.

As Taleek moves forward, his impact on Up2Us Sports and Equity Design will continue to be felt. His dedication to serving others and promoting positive change through sports will always be a part of Equity Design’s DNA. Looking ahead, Taleek has a world of opportunities awaiting him. With his passion for youth development and community engagement, Taleek has the potential to make a difference on a larger scale. Whether through further education, leadership roles, or innovative projects, Taleek's future impact has the potential to reach new heights and inspire others along the way.
