Up2Us Sports and FHI 360 Partner to Train International Coaches in SBYD

The Up2Us Sports Training Team recently partnered with FHI 360 to provide training to adaptive sports coaches and administrators from Portugal and Vietnam. FHI 360 is a nonprofit human development organization dedicated to improving lives in lasting ways by advancing integrated, locally driven solutions.

Held on Wednesday, November 16th in Chicago, IL, the in-person training was for FHI 360’s Adaptive Sports, Disability Rights, and Inclusion Sports Visitors Program. The group was composed of 24 adaptive sports coaches and administrators from Portugal and Vietnam. There were three translators in total - 1 Portuguese and 3 Vietnamese.

The group received two training sessions - Trauma and the Brain, and Building Positive Program Culture. Read brief synopsises of the sessions below.

Trauma and the Brain 101 [90-minutes]: Trauma-informed coaches have an understanding of how the human brain responds to stress and trauma and can recognize that the behavior of young people tells a powerful story. This session clarifies the importance for trauma-sensitive coaches to understand that there’s more than what meets the eye when it comes to the reactions young people may have in our programs.

Building Positive Program Culture [90-minutes]: Teams with a strong, positive culture help youth feel connected and safe. There are four things coaches can do to build this culture: follow a strict behavior code; practice positive traditions; provide opportunities to matter; and help kids make friends. This session explores how coaches can create a strong culture that supports their other programming efforts.
