For the eighth consecutive year, Up2Us Sports has received funding from Serve Illinois. For the 2023-2024 year, the grant will support 25 coaches around the city of Chicago with emphasis on economically vulnerable communities of the South and West Side.

As a child growing up just outside Los Angeles in La Puente (CA), DeAnna Tunstalle spent her summers playing sports and participating in summer camps in LA. Now, as the Senior Director II at Algin Sutton Recreation Center, she is the one in charge of ensuring that the park is providing services to meet the needs of the community.

Sports teams at every level designate a player to be the Captain. In fact, in the NFL and NHL, individual players are recognized with a bold “C” on their jerseys or sweaters. The Captain is the team leader among the players and is expected to be a role model and mentor while setting the tone for communication, preparation, competitiveness, conduct, and sportsmanship. These are traits exemplified by Tiffany Rubin, the Director of Youth Programs for the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation.
