Job Description

THE ROLE Up2Us is looking for a Regional Director for Los Angeles and the surrounding areas. This is an entrepreneurial position for someone who believes in the Up2Us mission and wants to use sports to impact at-risk youth in the southwestern corner of the U.S. The position will report directly to a COO and/or the Up2Us Sr. Management. The key areas of focus for the LA Regional Director are 1) cultivating an active community of Up2Us stakeholders; 2) overseeing the Up2Us Coach Across America program; 3) fundraising; 4) working with the Up2Us team in establishing LA as the hub of regional services for Up2Us and its member organizations; and 5) implementing the Up2Us strategic plan. The ideal candidate is creative thinking, groundbreaking, and passionate. (S)he sees this as an opportunity to build a nonprofit legacy around sports in their region while at the same time work closely with a national team of equally passionate foot-soldiers who are building a movement across the nation. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Cultivating Up2Us Stakeholders a. Establish Up2Us as the “go-to” organization in the field of sports-based youth development for foundations, corporations, sports organizations and local youth sports programs b. Develop and execute activities and campaigns that unite Up2Us member organizations and engage them with tools, resources and best practices to be successful c. Conduct outreach on behalf of Up2Us to key policymakers and other leaders in the field of sports, education, health, violence prevention, evaluation, nonprofit management, youth development, juvenile justice, parks, housing and other public and private agencies d. Explore ways to communicate the Up2Us mission (sports as solution, coaches as powerful change agents) to the general public and those “outside the choir”. Approaches may include media partnerships, marketing efforts, social media campaigns, special events, speaking at panels, etc. 2. Overseeing Up2Us Coach Across America a. Work with national staff and the local LA Program Manager to oversee the Coach Across America program so that it is compliant with all national, federal and state guidelines b. Develop strategies to increase the demand for trained CAA coaches in programs serving at-risk youth c. Work with the national development team to apply for State AmeriCorps funding d. Ensure that internal controls are in place to manage local Americorps funding and any other regional funding for the program. 3. Fundraising a. Cultivate corporate, foundation and individual donors b. Write grants c. Manage donor contacts through the national donor database d. Participate in national development teleconferences e. Develop “special funding initiatives” that may be unique to the LA Region that can be models for the rest of the nation (i.e., raising money for a “sports empowerment zone” to concentrate Up2Us services in an underserved neighborhood; launching a “girls in sports initiative” to hire and train women as coaches for young girls). This is where your creativity and skills as a nonprofit strategist come in! 4. Establishing LA as the Southwest “Hub” a. Work with the COO and Up2Us Senior Managers to define and execute a multi-year process of “regionalizing Up2Us services”. This process would include managing Coach Across America (CAA) across multiple southwestern states from Los Angeles; identifying training opportunities and executing them for the region; managing Up2Us member organizations and member services besides CAA; and communicating new resources, best practices and upcoming events. Note: Up2Us will continue to oversee finances, HR, and organizational quality control from its headquarters in New York. 5. Oversee Implementation of the Up2Us Strategic Plan a. Grow Coach Across America by finding new opportunities to partner with stakeholders who can host, recruit, and fund our highly trained workforce of coaches. b. Establish Up2Us as the premier coach trainer in sports-based youth development by finding new opportunities to partner with stakeholders who can host, fund and participate in Up2Us training. c. Engage members in the Up2Us accreditation process whereby local youth sports programs are assessed and provided training and other resources in order to develop competencies to be “best-in-show” SBYD Programs. d. Become a major voice for the importance of SBYD in communities in the southwest by engaging in local marketing, advocacy and public speaking.
