Development VISTA – NEW YORK (Up2Us Sports)

Up2Us Sports is a national nonprofit dedicated to using the power of sports and highly trained coaches to reduce violence, promote health and inspire academic success for our nation's most vulnerable youth. Up2Us Sports' research, training and on-the-ground initiatives empower sports programs across the country to become a united force for meaningful change. Up2Us Sports' signature Coach Across America (CAA) program places and trains the nation's best and brightest role models to bring sports-based youth development to the most underserved communities. Up2Us Sports coaches understand that every program session, practice or game is a chance to positively impact a child's future. To date, Up2Us Sports has reached more than 284,000 youth by placing 1,864 coaches in underserved urban communities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a national service program to fight poverty in America. Each VISTA member makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. In return for their service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance and health benefits during their service, and have the option to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or post-service stipend after completing their service. The Up2Us Sports Development VISTA will be based in the New York City National office and will help leverage funds for Up2Us Sports and continue the growth of its mission to provide sports-based youth development programming to youth in underserved communities. The VISTA will also work toward a stronger integration of the Up2Us Sports Development and Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) teams.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Development

  • Research and identify potential funders including foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individuals
  • Utilize customized donor management systems to track national activities and to input grants, reports, and other relevant attachments for record-keeping
  • Assist in ongoing cultivation and fundraising events as necessary
  • Assist in writing and editing letters of inquiries, grant proposals, and decks for national prospects
  • Assist in the creation and distribution of annual reports, quarterly newsletters, and seasonal appeals in coordination with the Marketing team
  • Process donations and distribute letters of gift acknowledgement with tax-deductible eligibility information (including in-kind)
  • Participate in bi-weekly all-staff conference calls and development conference calls

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Build a database of relevant statistics for inclusion in grant proposals
  • Build systems for collaboration between development and evaluation teams
  • Improve systems for evaluation data sharing

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Interest in development and evaluation for nonprofit organizations
  • Able to work independently at times and collaborate with multiple stakeholders
  • Highly organized and detailed orientated
  • Computer literate and well developed technology skills
  • Ability to be flexible and manage multiple tasks
  • Commitment to the mission of Up2Us Sports

Service Benefits

This is an AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a monthly stipend of approximately $1,200/month depending on living costs in New York City. Members qualify for federal assistance and loan deferment. Other benefits include a monthly metro card and a small rent subsidy. Upon successful completion of an AmeriCorps VISTA term, service members earn an Education Award ($5,500) that can be put towards student loans or future educational plans. There is opportunity for professional development and membership in a national network of AmeriCorps service members. VISTA also subsidizes relocation upon the start of your service. This position will start on November 14, 2016.
