Up2Us Sports Hosts Virtual MLK Day of Service Event
On Monday, January 18th, Up2Us Sports hosted a virtual event for MLK Day of Service. Nearly ten years after Martin Luther King Jr. Day signed into law as a federal holiday, it was officially established as a national day of service by Congress in 1994. It is observed as “a day on, not a day off” and is the only federal holiday nationally recognized as a day of service. This day of service is led by AmeriCorps, who also funds our Up2Us Sports Coach Program.
MLK Day of Service is an inspiring way to see how individuals of all different backgrounds come together to make their communities better. Here at Up2Us Sports we are dedicated to serving and bettering our communities; MLK Day of Service is a humbling reminder of that. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the service that we have done and will continue to do. It’s an opportunity to acknowledge the commitment of those who engage in service work and honor all that Dr. King taught.
On this national day of service, over 300 individuals signed up to participate in Up2Us Sports’ virtual 2-mile bike/walk/run to promote physical activity in their communities while dressed in orange to bring awareness to cultural diversity. The event commenced with an enthusiastic and energetic virtual “Welcome & Warm-Up” led by Up2Us Coaches to prepare participants for their 2-mile adventure. Whether it was a walk on a trail, a leisurely bike ride, or a fast run, our communities came together with the intention of service in mind. Scroll through to see some of our amazing participants!
Thank you to everyone who participated in our event or any other act of service on MLK Day. We are incredibly grateful for all of your support. Service is how we bring meaningful change. Continue to serve; to better your community; to reflect and carry Dr. King’s teachings with you always.
